Girl, 11, dies after being hit by ‘OAP drunk driver’ as she walked home from school

A girl has died after being run over by a suspected drink-driver as she walked home from school.

The 11-year-old primary school pupil suffered severe head injuries after being mowed down by an elderly man driving a Range Rover at 4.15pm on Thursday.

The incident took place on Mytton Oak Road in Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

The youngster, who has not yet been named, was rushed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital but she was later pronounced dead, despite the best efforts of medics.

A 77-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and causing death by dangerous driving.

Witnesses have told how the pensioner also knocked down a garden wall, a telegraph pole and a lamp post along the residential street.

West Mercia Police said the man declined treatment from ambulance staff at the scene before he was arrested.

Chief Inspector Alison Davies said: ‘We are currently establishing the circumstances around this tragic incident.

‘We are in the very early stages of the investigation and I would urge anyone who witnessed the collision, or saw the vehicle beforehand, to contact us on 101 quoting reference 528s of 15 June as soon as possible.’

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: ‘Emergency services arrived to find a young girl, in cardiac arrest after being involved in a collision with a 4×4.

‘Ambulance staff immediately commenced life support on the girl at the scene.

‘Due to the proximity of Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, the team took the decision to rapidly convey her by land ambulance on blue lights to the nearby A&E whilst resuscitation efforts continued en-route.

‘Tragically, despite further treatment in hospital, nothing could be done to save the girl and she has since died.’

Police are appealing for witnesses with any information to call 101.
