Manchester United will battle Juventus to try and sign Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes, with agent Jorge Mendes informing the Catalan club of their interest on Tuesday.
The notorious Portuguese super-agent – who also represents Jose Mourinho – caused quite a stir when he arrived in Catalonia, spotted entering a taxi at the airport, and promptly headed to Camp Nou to holds talks with Barca.
Mundo Deportivo report that he was there for several reasons, but chief among was to discuss transfers for both Gomes and reported Arsenal target Arda Turan.
He presented several bids for the 23-year-old midfielder, with United reportedly having ramped up their interest last week, though, unlike Turan, Barcelona are not especially keen to lose Gomes.
Ernesto Valverde believes he still has a role to play in the squad, while he is well-regarded at the club despite struggling to adjust in his first season in La Liga.
Despite an underwhelming campaign, he has continued to attract interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, with Juventus and United both making contact with Mendes over a potential deal.
The outcome of the discussions is not known, but Barca would not be prepared to offload Gomes until a replacement is secured.
Andre Gomes’ 2016/17 La Liga stats
Top of their wish list is pass-master Marco Verratti, who has excelled in France since leaving Serie A, but the Catalan club are conscious of the need to raise funds with PSG likely to demand upwards of £70 million.
Any deal for Gomes, therefore, is likely to happen much deeper into the window after Barca have discovered the outcome of their pursuit of Verratti.
United’s move for Gomes would represent a double raid on La Liga, with the club looking to wrap up a deal for Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata to add to their acquisition of Benfica defender Victor Lindelof.
