Woman uses heartbreaking opening line on all her Tinder matches – gets a variety of responses
How would you respond to this opening chat up line: “My dad just died”? It’s provocative. Heartbreaking, maybe? Definitely not usual.
Jenn Welch, 36, has been using it for the past few weeks. She’s a comedian from New York and it’s her way of dealing with the fact that her dad really did just die of cancer .
Jenn has been using the line on Tinder. It’s in her bio, too, along with her job. Men have been responding with very different things.
Jenn told Cosmopolitan that the Tinder plan is a way of managing her grief. Instead of being emotionally reliant on somebody, without really thinking things through, she’s turning her hurt into a bit of a joke. But there is a serious side to it.
The comedian has been sharing her conversations on Instagram and Tumblr. She’s named them ‘Dead Dad Tinder’.
“Ten years ago, I would be getting into a really horrible relationship right now, I’d want somebody there to make me feel better,” she said.
“That, to me, is the honesty in this joke. I’m just gonna be like, hey my dad just died, and see what happens. I don’t know if that’s more mature [than jumping into a relationship], but it’s definitely funnier. It’s definitely less painful.”
Naturally, a lot of Jenn’s matches and resulting conversations are quite awkward. But the intention isn’t to make the men the joke.
It’s just an obscure therapy. Hopefully Jenn is okay and she recovers. Until then, there’s Dead Dad Tinder.
Some men are painfully honest…
